When news is a
story in a hurry and presents factual thing, feature is different in many ways.
A feature, whether for a magazine, internet, or newspaper/tabloid, is presented
in a mere detailed exposition. It is not a story at glance, but a presentation
of a figure, an idea, a thing, etc. in a more complete information. The writer
exposes some background which he/she gets from interviews, a little research,
and interviews with the figure he/she is exposing as well as other people or
even experts which know the topic very well, or, the writer can also interview
people who have special relationship with the person being exposed.
Different from
news or article, a feature is usually much longer. Thus, in a magazine or
newspaper, especially it is given space. Sometimes, it is longer than some
articles in the media. A feature is distinct from news or article in the
writing style. Though it is presented in a more detailed information, the
writing or language used is somewhat friendlier and stylish, using some figure
terms or sentences. Even if the feature is supported with experts’ opinions.
Moreover, the writing style can also be made two-way instead of a one-way
communication. The writer can also use persuasive style beside expository
writing styles in some parts of the text.
A feature,
therefore is but a combination of a story, information, and personal communication
between the writer and the reader. This type of writing must be able to attract
readers to know more about an idea, or a thing, or a person being exposed by
the feature. To achieve this, a feature can also be supported by photos or, in
the electronic media, by video or film about the subject/object. A feature is
sometimes used to support or promote a product, or an event, or a campaign, etc.
Note: Friendly style makes more people attracted.
